Homemade Deodorant Recipe

IMG_3398.JPG

Admitadly, I can be a little crunchy granola when it comes to some things. I have become way more aware of the chemicals that I put on my body. I decided to make a switch from store bought deodorants to the homemade, natural variety. To be honest,  this is not the absolute best if you are doing very sweaty and odor producing work. You might have to decide between cancer or a little funk. Hey, life is a trade off. Here’s the recipe:

  • 6-8 Tbsp Coconut oil (solid state)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder ( try your local health food store)
  • *Optional* 2-3 drops of essential oil of your choice, lemon would be awesome ( for those with sensitive skin I would omit this)

Directions:

Combine equal portions of baking soda & arrowroot powder.

Slowly add coconut oil and work it in with a spoon or hand blender until it maintains a firm but pliable texture. It should be about the same texture as commercial deodorant, solid but able to be applied easily. If it is too wet, add more arrowroot powder to thicken it up.

I scooped this recipe into my old deodorant dispenser but I also use a jar in the warmer months. Word to the wise, this will melt if not kept in a cool environment.

  1. Aidah, this is a great idea. I do agree that these natural deodorants aren’t as strong if you are going somewhere where you know that you will sweat profusely and also be close to other people. You are right, it may not be worth the risk if you have a business meeting or a wedding to attend. In that case I will use the “unhealthy” option. But atleast for now I am doing 90% natural deodorant.

    1. Although I was poking fun a little bit. I am very aware about the chemicals that are in these store bought deodorants. 90% is awesome.

  2. I have been using the same thing as my deodorant. It works great, but when it hot out I will have to shower twice to get a lasting effect. Store deodorant have always been a issue for me and natural store deodorant don’t work.

    1. That’s the story of my life. Store bought is no good and homemade isn’t as effective. If you give this one a try let me know what you think!
